Wish I could give this book 5 stars for the way the writing touched me. This is a tragic story, well written and interesting to the end. Kate’s romance with Jake, one of the townspeople, is strained because of her relationships with Nat and Rissa, and although Nat marries someone else, Nat and Kate come to realize that they have always loved each other. When his father insists on Nat’s going on an ocean voyage as a cabin boy, Nat’s health is broken and his life is changed forever. Nat shows promise as a musician, although his father wants him to be a ship’s captain, and forbids him to play the piano. She befriends the Fortune children, Nat and Rissa (Clarissa) and this is the story of Kate’s life, from childhood to old woman, and how the Fortunes are entwined with it. Set during the death throes of the tall shipbuilding industry ("No Port Too Far For Fortune Pines To Cast Their Shadows"), when the summer tourist trade was gradually encroaching on the wild Maine coastline, this novel is a Galsworthian saga of the Fortune family as told by the voice of Kate Fernald, who came at age 10 with her mother to live and work at Fortune's Folly, the family's seaside home. Cinematically stunning and shot in an eloquently observational style, Time Out of Mind is an unforgettable plunge into a world that is all too easily overlooked.Ĭlick here to listen to Billy Hough’s “Radical Days,” the original song written for Time Out of Mind. This book, written in 1935, won the National Book Award for novels, and I can certainly see why. Shuffled into the unforgiving bureaucracy of a men’s shelter, George seems destined to wind up as just another lost soul swallowed up by the system-until he meets a gregarious, down-and-out ex-jazzman (played by Broadway legend Ben Vereen) who inspires George to reconnect with his estranged daughter (Jena Malone). Richard Gere delivers a soul-baring performance as George, a man whose struggle to find food and a place to sleep in New York City is beautifully captured with remarkable realism and heartrending compassion. Time Out of Mind, from Academy Award nominated writer/director Oren Moverman ( The Messenger, Rampart), is a haunting look at life on the streets immersing viewers in one man’s daily quest to survive.
